The crisis of colonial rule in Latin America caused the rise of certain political and social concepts, as well as the transformation of older ones. Among the first is public opinion. Its importance and semantic complexity grew from mid-eighteenth century, and became central to discussions during the crisis of Iberian monarchy and the Hispanic American revolution. The purpose of this paper is to analyze this process in the Provincia Oriental between 1810 and 1820, from the History of Concepts point of view.
